If you only try one king cake this Mardi Gras season, consider one from Rouses Supermarket’s full-service bakery.

According to the Sun Herald’s third annual king cake bracket, the grocery store offers the best on the MS Coast. Rouses edged ahead of its competitors with more than 9,000 votes in the final round.

Rouses held the lead in each of the bracket’s four rounds, but this win was by no means a cake walk. The Louisiana-based store’s biggest contenders were Cheeky Monkey in Biloxi and Sugar Pop in Waveland.

For the second time in three years, Cheeky Monkey made it to the final round. The bakery won the inaugural bracket with more than 16,000 votes in 2023.

Here’s more about this year’s winner.

Variety is the spice of life

Rouses offers gourmet king cakes in eight flavors: churro, wedding cake, bananas Foster, funfetti, Tres leche, s’mores, cookie dough and brownie.

The fillings include strawberry, pecan praline, apple, bavarian, lemon cream cheese, strawberry cream cheese and apple cream cheese.

In addition to selling its king cakes in stores across the MS Coast, the bakery can ship its traditional and filled king cakes anywhere in the country in one to three days.
