It’s not a dream, Toto and Dorothy, and you’re not in Kansas anymore. You’re in Biloxi. Specifically, you’ll be at The Wizard of Ohr, a major fundraiser for the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art.
This year, the museum’s annual Lawn Gala has moved inside — where the capricious nature of weather is never an issue — to the IP Casino & Resort’s ballroom. The fundraiser will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Sept. 30.
Major characters from “The Wizard of Oz” will greet guests as they enter the IP ballroom: Glinda the Good (Marie Joachim); The Wicked Witch of the West (Cathy Shelton Reed); The Tin Man (Joe Martinelli); The Scarecrow (Ellis Branch); The Cowardly Lion (Anthony Bates) and, of course, Dorothy (Kathryn Winter). Highlights includes a yellow brick road and Emerald City-worthy lighting.
“But we don’t want to give it all away,” said Libby Gunn, event chairman. “It’s a must-see event.”
A favorite movie — not the one you’re expecting — led Gunn to the theme.
“You know the movie with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, ‘You’ve Got Mail’? I love that movie,” she said. “At the end, they play the song from ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow,’ and that gave me the idea for the theme.”
Guests will enjoy food prepared by three of the IP’s restaurants — Thirty-Two, Tien and Costa Cucina — as well as selected wines. They also will have the opportunity to bid on a variety of silent auction items, including one-of-a-kind artwork from local artists and gifts from Coast businesses.
Tickets are $90 each for museum members and $100 for nonmembers. They are available at georgeohr.org or by calling the museum at 228-374-5547.
