Many Coast attractions offer discounts for seniors
For many seniors in South Mississippi, living on a monthly budget is part of a normal routine. But a fixed or budgeted income doesn’t have to mean seniors can’t have fun.
There are several community centers seniors along the Coast that offer activities for little or no cost to seniors. And there are several popular attractions that offer discounts for seniors, which makes it easier for seniors to enjoy all the area has to offer but with less out-of-pocket expenses.
The following are some of the attractions that offer discounts for seniors. It is recommended that you call ahead before going to one as some have age-restrictions and the hours of operation may be subject to change.
Ship Island Excursions
Ferry rides to Ship Island in the Mississippi Sound leave daily from the Gulfport Small Craft Harbor. Seniors 62 and over can take the ferry round trip for $27. Schedules and more information can be found by calling 864-1014.
Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art
The popular museum in Biloxi hosts several exhibits throughout the year. “Our Love Affair With Baseball” is one of the current exhibits at the museum, which is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Admission for seniors 60 and over is $8. For more information, call 374-5574.
Walter Anderson Museum of Art
The Ocean Springs museum houses many original works of the celebrated Coast artist Walter Anderson. There also are many rotating exhibits at the museum. It is open seven days a week. Admission to the museum is $8 for seniors. For more information, call 872-3164.
Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum
The Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum in Biloxi opened in 1986 in an effort to preserve the heritage of the seafood industry and the impact it has made on the Gulf Coast. The museum offers different educational opportunities as well as exhibits. It is open seven days a week. Admission for seniors is $8. For more information, call 435-6320.
Pascagoula River Audubon Center
One of the newest attractions on the Coast, this Jackson County attraction is located on Rhodes Bayou in Moss Point. It offers nature, fine art and interactive exhibits, as well as guided tours along the Pascagoula River for an additional fee. It is open Tuesday through Saturday. Admission for seniors is $8. Tourism on the Mississippi Gulf Coast
Mississippi Gulf Coast tourism is a $1.6 billion industry and accounts for one-third of the state's total tourism revenue. In addition to that, in FY2010, the three Coast counties accounted for $93 million, or about 43 percent, of the state’s total tourism capital investment.
