A Gulfport man with a penchant for writing and sci-fi found his niche in a published anthology now out in paperback.

Martin Zdziemborsky has a short story in "New Tales of the Old Ones" published by Knight Watch Press out of Britain.

His tale is titled, "There's a Sea Serpent in my Swimming Pool."

The St. John and USM graduate said he saw a call for stories that were written in the style of H.P. Lovecraft, a science fiction/horror writer from the 1930s.

"This is a collection of short stories that contributes to his mythos as a writer," Zdziemborsky said.

His story originally was accepted two to three years ago and initial plans called for an e-book only distribution. But the publishing house changed editors and the new editor cut some of the stories and re-launched it as a paperback.

"I've been writing and dreaming since I was small," he said. "Writing is something I have to do. It's a drive in me."

In fact, Zdziemborsky is hoping that now that he has this short story published, he can interest a publisher in a collection of his own works.

"It's about ready to go," he said. "It's five or six stories. Like Stephen King sets most of his stories in Maine, mine are set in Mississippi. For instance, Gulfport is called Southern Cross. And they're all set in the 1930s."

The book, "New Tales of the Old Ones," is available on Amazon for $14.99.

This story was originally published February 20, 2016 at 3:13 PM with the headline "Gulfport author's 'new tale' offers homage to Lovecraft, sci-fi ."
