This year's Gulf Coast Carnival Association theme is Extra! Extra!
What's the back story?
"My wife and I and the ball chairman came up with newspaper headlines for the tableau this year," said Steve Polk, GCCA captain. "We had a time coming up with headlines that weren't negative, though. But in the end, I think we have a great collection of them, including ones that have meaning to people here on the Coast."
Several results are connected to sports, such as the Saints' Super Bowl win in February 2010, Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series and the "Miracle on Ice" in the 1980 Winter Olympics.
There's also one that probably every maid wishes she could portray. Not to give away too much, it involves a 1973 event in Pascagoula.
Want to see the GCCA coronation ball for yourself? Participation in the ball, which is Feb. 8, is for sponsors only, but public viewing of the tableau and presentation of the court is available in the balcony of the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi with doors opening at 7 p.m. for the 8 p.m. event.
There is no charge for public viewing, but tickets are highly recommended to secure a balcony seat. They are available at the Sun Herald, Biloxi Visitors Center, Biloxi City Hall, the Coliseum and several other locations and area businesses.
