Cream's 1967 Classic 'Sunshine of Your Love' Ranks No. 2 in Most Recognizable Rock Riffs

Some guitar riffs are so iconic that listeners can identify them within seconds.

According to Fender, one of the most instantly recognizable rock riffs ever recorded belongs to Cream's 1967 classic "Sunshine of Your Love."

The song landed at No. 2 on Fender's ranking of the most recognizable guitar riffs of all time, placing it among some of the most influential tracks in rock history.

A Riff Inspired by Jimi Hendrix

While Eric Clapton's guitar work helped make "Sunshine of Your Love" legendary, the song's origins can actually be traced back to another rock icon. Cream bassist Jack Bruce came up with the song's famous bassline after attending a Jimi Hendrix concert.

The riff immediately stood out as something special. When Clapton joined Bruce by playing the now-famous guitar line alongside the bass, one of rock's most unforgettable hooks was born.

The result was a song that blended blues, psychedelic rock, and hard rock influences into a sound that still feels instantly familiar today.

Eric Clapton Never Stopped Playing It

Part of what has helped "Sunshine of Your Love" endure is its staying power. Clapton reportedly loved the song so much that he continued performing it throughout his solo career long after Cream disbanded.

Even Hendrix himself became a fan. According to Fender, Hendrix occasionally performed the song live despite not realizing he had helped inspire its creation in the first place.

Why the Song Still Resonates

Released in 1967 on Cream's breakthrough album Disraeli Gears, "Sunshine of Your Love" became one of the band's signature songs and remains a staple of classic rock radio.

Its simple but powerful riff is a major reason why. The moment those opening notes begin, many listeners instinctively recognize the song-and often find themselves singing along before the first lyric even arrives.
