TikTok Is in Love With This Sweet Home Gardener From Georgia Who Shares Tips for Beginners
There are plenty of home gardeners showing off their bounties and sharing advice on TikTok - but no gardener is as calming and cozy as Hayden (@hayden_396), a gardener from Southwest Georgia.
On her TikTok page, Hayden cheerfully and tranquilly shares updates on her backyard garden, as well as tips for gardening that she has learned over the past two decades. In a recent video that has more than 90,000 views, Hayden shared a few of her top tips for beginner gardeners - read on to learn them!
Use T-Posts and String to Keep Tomato Plants From Falling
The first tip in Hayden's TikTok video is a DIY trick for preventing tomato plants from falling over. First, she sticks some wooden T-posts into the soil - and she notes that if you don't want to buy T-posts, could simply use found sticks or old broom handles. Then, she wraps string from post to post, all the way from the bottom to the top, creating a string fence. This essentially serves as a scaffolding that the tomato plants can gently lean on, which keeps them from breaking.
Install a Trellis to Help Plants That Grow Vines
If you grow plants that vine, such as butternut squash, spaghetti squash and cucumber, Hayden suggests installing a wire trellis to help them grow. Hayden's arched trellis is beautiful, and creates a magical tunnel in the middle of her garden. And to help her plants get started growing along the trellis, she uses her hands to weave the vines and tendrils around the wires - and she says that eventually, they'll just grow that way on their own.
Tap and Shake Your Tomato Plants to Help Them Pollinate
Even though tomatoes are self-pollinating, you can actually help them get the pollination process going, according to Hayden. One way is to tap a tomato plant's blooms repeatedly, and another is to gently shake the plant's stem, she says.
Stop Zucchini Plants From Taking Over Your Entire Garden
Zucchini is another plant that vines and has a tendency to grow every which way - but this can be avoided. To help prevent her zucchini plants from vining too much, Hayden puts a gardening post in the soil near the center of her zucchini plant, and then she uses some string to to tie the plant's thick stem to the post.
