33 Years Ago, the ‘Scariest Alien Movie of All Time' Was Released

With his new movie, Disclosure Day, Steven Spielberg wonders how humankind would react to undeniable proof of the existence of extraterrestrials.

It's a subject that pop culture has been fascinated with for decades now, dating all the way back to H.G. Wells' book The War of the Worlds in 1898. In the century-and-a-quarter since, alien aficionados have seen countless versions of space beings on the big and small screen, ranging from toothy and terrifying to downright adorable (Grogu, we're looking at you!).

Directors have brought their own flair to sci-fi as well, with names including Spielberg, Ridley Scott, James Cameron, Tim Burton, George Lucas, John Carpenter, Barry Sonnenfeld, and Denis Villeneuve all finding new ways to entertain by putting an E.T. front and center.

But when it comes to one of the most disturbing and scariest alien movies ever, it's a little-known movie from 1993 that might just take the cake.

‘Fire In the Sky'

Released in March 1993, Fire In the Sky was a box office dud when it was first released. Made on a budget of $15 million by director Robert Lieberman, the movie only made $19.9 million in theaters.

The film revolves around a logger in Arizona who vanishes after a long day's work, only to later reappear in town, naked and malnourished, with horrifying memories of aliens running experiments on him. It's the scenes depicting the tests that really elevate its status.

The movie was ranked #1 in a 2022 list of the Scariest Alien Movies of All Time by the popular entertainment website IndieWire. While the list included classics like Alien, The Thing, Nope, Signs, War of the Worlds, Species, and A Quiet Place, it's what the outlet calls "what is hands down the scariest alien abduction scene ever made" that put it over the top.

Actor Patton Oswalt also praised the movie in 2022, placing it in his Top 5 favorite sci-fi films of all time for the exact same reason.

"It in itself is not a great science fiction film overall, but it has a sequence that is so good, and so frightening and it's the closest I've ever seen on film to what it would be like to encounter an alien culture and alien technology," he told GQ in his critique, also praising the abduction sequence.

"It's one of the best depictions of what it must feel like to encounter not just an alien culture, but an advanced technological culture," he added.

Real Life Inspiration

Fire In the Sky was based on the 1978 book The Walton Experience from real-life logger Travis Walton. In it, Walton details his own alleged experience with an alien abduction on November 5, 1975, a tale which he first sold to The National Enquirer.

In the film, D.B. Sweeney stars as Walton, while Robert Patrick appears as co-worker and alleged witness Mike Rogers.

Rogers and several other loggers allegedly all took polygraphs after Walton's disappearance-saying they saw a flying saucer-and passed. In 2021, Rogers appeared to briefly waver in his support for Walton, but he has remained on record as saying that something happened that evening.

Many, however, believed it was all a hoax.

According to the White Mountain Independent, Walton still lives in the same area today and "regularly appears at conferences, film screenings and community events to retell his story and answer questions."

In November 2025, he participated in an event marking the 50th anniversary of his alleged abduction, which included a screening of the film.

Per the local report, "attendees at the anniversary event heard directly from Walton as he answered questions about his memories and his evolving thoughts on extraterrestrial life." He also "acknowledged the toll the experience has taken on his life, as well as the isolation that often came with it, but he also shared that he feels a sense of purpose in continuing to tell his story."

The movie is streaming now on MGM+. Scream Factory also released it on Blu-ray in 2021.
