Bruce Springsteen's No. 1 Hit 'Dancing in the Dark' Was Released on This Day 42 Years Ago
Few artists are as iconic as "The Boss." Backed by the equally iconic E Street Band, New Jersey's finest has left an indelible impact on the music industry, with his six-decade career producing 21 studio albums. Bruce Springsteen is one of the best-selling artists of all time, to boot. He has multiple accolades under his belt, including a whopping 20 Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, a Tony Award, and two Golden Globe Awards.
While his albums consistently chart well, there's no denying that Born in the U.S.A. is the best-selling album of Springsteen's career. It birthed "Dancing in the Dark," the first single from the aforementioned seventh studio album, which became its biggest hit.
Released on this day 42 years ago, "Dancing in the Dark" peaked at No. 1 on seven weekly global charts, including the US Mainstream Rock and US Cash Box Top 100 charts. It reached No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, where it remained for four weeks. The synth-rock/pop tune also went Platinum in nine countries and Gold in three.
Springsteen penned the lyrics for the single over one night. Thematically, the song represented the musician's feelings of isolation in the aftermath of The River's (his fifth record) success and the difficulties of writing another hit single. The dance-rock track went on to become the highest-selling 12-inch single in the US in 1984. Its memorable music video featured the breakout of young Friends star Courteney Cox, whom The Boss invited on stage to dance with him.
Critically, "Dancing in the Dark" was well-received. At the time, Cash Boxhailed the song as "classic Springsteen," noting that it had "gutsy vocals set to a hard-driving backbeat." One retrospective painted it as a "celebration," while examining the darker meaning behind the toe-tapping tune.
Springsteen snagged his first Grammy win with "Dancing in the Dark" for "Best Rock Vocal Performance" in 1985. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame also lists it among its "500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll."
While it might not top many best-of lists, "Dancing in the Dark" is undeniably Springsteen's signature hit. (You're probably humming it to yourself as we speak.)
