Luke Skywalker card now most expensive ‘Star Wars' card ever sold
A Luke Skywalker bubblegum card has sold for $687,500.
The Star Wars collectable, featuring the hero of the original sci-fi franchise, more than doubled a previous record for such an item.
The 1977 Topps Series 1 card, which would have come in a pack with a stick of pink gum, was described as "mint" condition by Dallas-based Heritage Auctions.
Other notable Star Wars items featured as part of a sale that achieved £2.8 million (over $3 million).
An exhibition-quality 5-foot Millennium Falcon constructed using period-authentic Industrial Light & Magic techniques, and exhibited at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, went for £273,000 (more than $370,000). It set a record for the highest price ever achieved for a non-production-made Star Wars model.
A Mandalorian helmet worn by Pedro Pascal in the TV series made £31,200 (more than $40,000), while a Star Wars #1 35-cent comic variant achieved £126,750 (more than $170,000).
Joe Maddalena, executive vice president at Heritage Auctions, said: "These results demonstrate just how powerful and expansive the Star Wars collecting universe has become. From vintage trading cards that redefined expectations-especially the Luke Skywalker rookies-to a museum-quality Millennium Falcon and record-setting comic books, we're seeing extraordinary demand across every category."
