We Asked a Stylist to Analyze Trader Joe's New Totes-It's a Summer Forecast
Trader Joe’s is launching a brand new mini tote bag selection after the stunning success of the originals-and they may predict this summer’s fashion trends.
In 2024, the grocery store released pastel-colored miniature canvas bags, a 13-inch version of its classic tote, for $2.99 each. In February 2026, a Trader Joe’s spokesperson confirmed the totes would be making a limited return once more, for the same price, and with the same designs and colors-and now the company has revealed a brand new selection, perfect for summer.
A Trader Joe’s spokesperson told Newsweek that the six new tote bags will be released nationwide on May 20, for $3.99 each, for a limited time only. These new editions are brightly colored in green, orange, blue and purple, with a silhouette design of a Trader Joe’s store and palm trees, in 10 x 6 x 6 inches, with a 1.5-gallon capacity.
Stylist Michelle Barrett, founder of Capsule Closet Stylist, told Newsweek that the new totes are “bang on trend for color trends for summer 2026.”
The must-have summer palettes for 2026 are a mix of high-energy citrus tones and calming neutrals, with key shades including lime green, butter yellow, and cobalt blue being paired with more neutral tones for balance, according to Vogue.
Trader Joe’s Is Tapping Into Trends With Its Upcoming Tote Bags
The upcoming new additions are a combination of the Insulated Bags and Mini Canvas Totes, coming after a 2025 release of similar bags in teal and magenta.
They’re described by Trader Joe’s as “a fun and fashionable way to carry all kinds of goodies from point A to point B and back again,” with the insulation helping to keep food, drinks and groceries cool. They are predicted to “fly off the shelves,” with the Trader Joe’s website warning customers to “pick up a Tote while you can-supplies are limited.”
“Apart from silver gray, candy colors are going to be huge this summer, worn together, so it is no surprise that they have used these shades,” Barrett, who has both private and celebrity clients, predicted. “As the last few summers have been a lot more minimalist, this is a welcome change.”
Who Is the Key Audience for the New Trader Joe’s Totes?
The Trader Joe’s Summer Fun Mini Insulated Totes feature a zipper top and reinforced handles, able to fit a six-pack of drinks.
Barrett suggested that the new totes are “trying to appeal to a younger audience, or young families looking for beach or camping experiences during the summer,” and pointed out the “decent” capacity for carrying drinks or lunch.
Why Is There Such a Frenzy To Get Hold of the Trader Joe’s Totes?
Trader Joe’s mini totes became an instant hit upon their release in 2024, even being resold online for hundreds of dollars after selling out in stores. When the company released an even bigger selection of colors in 2025, the frenzy for them grew even further.
It remains to be seen how the newest editions will fair, but with fashion experts predicting they’re the perfect summer accessory, it looks as though the trend may continue.
Trader Joe’s tote bags have “entered one of those cult following trends that often come about from social media like TikTok,” Barrett suggested-and this has certainly been the case in recent years.
According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, fans of the original mini totes were paying through the nose for the items, as Trader Joe’s only operates in the United States-and the totes were being listed on online marketplaces such as Depop and eBay for up to $10,000.
