The secret’s out. Fishing for red snapper doesn’t get any better than the Mississippi Coast and a recent publication confirmed it.

Fishingbooker.com, a blog for fishing enthusiasts, released a list of the eight best places on the Gulf Coast for red snapper fishing and Biloxi was included among the best of the best. In addition to having great fishing spots, the city was praised for its coastal charm, diversity and many attractions.

“This part of Mississippi’s “Secret Coast” really shines when it comes to angling,” said the website. “The fish bite both inshore and offshore, making it a great destination to satisfy any kind of saltwater angler.”

The blog recommended fishing near sunken wrecks about 25 miles offshore, “Along with tasty Red Snapper, you’ll get to fish for King Mackerel, Cobia, Sharks, and more around the same spots.”

Here are the 8 locations (in no particular order) recognized as prime spots for fishing red snapper

  • Port Aransas, Texas
  • Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, Alabama
  • Pensacola, Florida
  • Venice, Louisiana
  • Biloxi, Mississippi
  • Port Lavaca, Texas
  • Tampa, Florida
  • Fort Myers Beach, Florida

Biloxi’s recreational red snapper season opened Friday, May 24, and will continue until July 7. The season includes state and federal waters. The state’s bag limit is two per person. Catches must be at least 16 inches long.

Private recreational anglers may fish out to 200 nautical miles. Vessels with state for-hire permits can fish in state territorial waters, which is nine nautical miles south of the barrier islands.

The Gulf’s federal season runs from July 1 to Aug. 28.
