Coast native will share the stage with Ariana Grande, other stars
You can’t stop the beat for Mississippi Coast native Shayna Steele.
Steele is reprising her role as one of the original Dynamites trio in “Hairspray” for NBC’s upcoming “Hairspray Live!”
The other original Dynamites — Kamilah Marshall and Judine Somerville — will join Steele as the girl group in the live broadcast production scheduled to air at 7 p.m. Dec. 7, according to websites including Variety.com and broadway.com.
Ariana Grande will portray Penny Pingleton and newcomer Maddie Baillio will be Tracy Turnblad in “Hairspray Live!” Other stars include Harvey Fierstein as Edna Turnblad, Ephraim Sykes as Seaweed J. Stubbs, Jennifer Hudson as Motormouth Maybelle, Kristin Chenoweth as Velma Von Tussle, Dove Cameron as Amber Von Tussle, Garrett Clayton as Link Larkin, Derek Hough as Corny Collins, Martin Short as Wilbur Turnblad, Andrea Martin as Prudy Pingleton and Shahadi Wright Joseph as Little Inez, according to broadway.com. Rosie O’Donnell as the gym teacher and Sean Hayes as Mr. Pinky are scheduled for special appearances along with Billy Eichner as Rob Barker, the WZZT Baltimore newscaster.
The musical's original Broadway production opened in August 2002. It was based on the 1988 film by John Waters.
