Field’s Mediterranean restaurant has closed as the oldest surviving hotel in South Mississippi will meet the newest bed and breakfast hotel in downtown Biloxi.
Construction of Le Magnolia Hotel will begin in a couple of months on a vacant lot south of the old Magnolia Hotel, said Jourdan Nicaud with Nicaud Restaurant Group.
In preparation, the company has closed Field’s Mediterranean restaurant that has operated at the historic Magnolia Hotel since spring.
The hotel was built in 1847 and is a Mississippi Landmark, as the last of the original hotels still standing on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
“We are going to do a traditional bed and breakfast-style resort,” Nicaud said.
The old and new buildings will be connected by a courtyard and a second-story breezeway, he said. The 16 one-bedroom units will be in the new hotel and have balconies looking toward the water and courtyard. They’ll be in walking distance of Hard Rock and Beau Rivage casinos, the Biloxi Town Green and the marina.
The landmark hotel will become a major part of the new project, Nicaud said. Hotel guests will enter the lobby on the first floor of the historic hotel, where breakfast and lunch also will be served. A new bar and restaurant will be on the second floor of the original Magnolia Hotel.
Plans created by Harrell A.D.C. Architects in New Orleans were approved this month by the Biloxi Architectural and Historical Committee and the Biloxi Development Commission.
Brothers Jourdan and Field Nicaud are known for building restaurants, lodging and mixed-use developments across South Mississippi under their brand Eat, Stay, Play and for shaking things up when a better idea comes along.
They recently changed Toro Sushi restaurant near the waterfront in Bay St. Louis to Field’s Crab Shack. For those who still crave sushi, the full sushi menu is available at the nearby Field’s Steak and Oyster Bar in downtown Bay St. Louis.
The company also recently opened Pass Bungalows in the center of downtown Pass Christian, with hotel units, shops and Field’s Italian restaurant.
