Southern Girl Cookies, a Waveland sweet shop just off Highway 90, teamed up with New Orleans’ famed Central Grocery to bring its iconic muffuletta sandwich to the Mississippi Coast. On launch day, owner Kimberly Marquar sold more than 200 sandwiches in just 45 minutes.

Marquar said she got the idea for the partnership after visiting New Orleans and stopping for a muffuletta at Central Grocery.

“I thought to myself — I don’t want to have to come all the way to New Orleans to get a muffuletta,” Marquar said.

Located in the French Quarter, Central Grocery is famed for creating the first muffuletta in 1906. Manager Matthew Talbert said the deli’s sandwiches are popular because of their quality ingredients, fresh bread and famous homemade olive salad.

“We’re so happy and blessed that we’ve built such a recognizable brand here at Central Grocery,” Central Grocery Talbert said. “We just love feeding people and making people happy.”

At 10 a.m. Wednesday, eager customers lined the inside of the sweet shop.

Marquar said the sandwich has been especially popular among former New Orleans residents now living on the Coast.

“They want a taste of their home,” Marquar said.

Marquar said she will have more muffulettas available for purchase again Wednesday, July 23. Customers can pre-order them in-store or on Facebook Messenger.
