Summer is around the corner. Here are 6 great MS Coast breweries for a cold beer
Mississippi isn’t the first state many think of when it comes to craft beer, but with more than 20 breweries there’s certainly an appetite for it among the state’s consumers.
The Mississippi Coast is home to six of those breweries. One of the state’s first breweries opened on the Mississippi Coast in 2005 and one of the state’s newest breweries opened on the Coast last year.
Check out these six Mississippi Coast breweries:
Altered Reality Brewing
Altered Reality Brewing opened its doors in 2024, making it the newest brewery on the Mississippi Coast. The brewery, located at 969 Howard Ave. in Biloxi, recently celebrated its one-year anniversary in March.
Owners Jason Weaver and Michael Massey told the Sun Herald in 2024 they wanted the brewery to have a “family atmosphere.”
They may be well on their way to achieving that goal. In addition to brewing all their own pilsners, ales, stouts and other beers in house, Altered Reality boasts an arcade room with an assortment of different types of games and an outdoor picnic area with a rotating selection of local food trucks.
On Wednesday nights at 6 p.m., the brewery hosts a trivia night and on Thursdays at 6 p.m. they partner with Biloxi Bicycle Works for a 5K fun run around Biloxi.
Altered Reality is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Chandeleur Island Brewing Company
The brewery that brothers Cam and Cain Roberds opened 10 years ago seems to be ever growing.
With beers like Freemason Golden Ale and Lil’ Smack IPA being popular options in stores and restaurants across Mississippi, it might be no surprise another Chandeleur Island Brewing Company location is on the way.
Cam Roberds told the Sun Herald earlier this year that he doesn’t yet have a name for the new brewpub he’s working on with developer Joe Cloyd inside a historic train depot in Pascagoula, but “there definitely will be beers named after the trains.”
It will be months yet before the new location opens. In the meantime, though, thirsty folks can visit Chandeleur Island’s taproom in Gulfport or their location inside the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport which opened in 2023.
The brewery and taproom, located at 2711 14th Street in Gulfport, offers new beers, beers that aren’t canned and distributed, as well as a food menu featuring items like deviled eggs, burgers and street tacos. The taproom is open Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Chandeleur Island Brewing also offers brewery tours at noon and 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Their annual food and music festival, Chandyfest, taking place on Saturday, April 19, will serve as Chandeleur Island Brewing’s 10-year anniversary celebration.
Fly Llama Brewing
Owned by Master Cicerone David Reese, Fly Llama Brewing’s beers can be found in stores across South Mississippi. Located at 186 Bohn Street in Biloxi, Fly Llama Brewing even has a brew for the Biloxi Shuckers, whose stadium neighbors the brewery.
Fly Llama, which expanded its brewing capacity last year, offers beers like its flagship Fly Lager and Fly-PA as well as an array of seltzers and other specialty brews on tap and in cans.
Outside Fly Llama’s cozy taproom is a food truck, Hungry Llama, which serves up things like burgers, sandwiches, loaded fries and even gumbo.
Reese told the Sun Herald last year that he plans to grow his business further. He purchased a building across the street from Fly Llama where he plans to open Copper Llama, a distillery making rum, bourbon and flavored vodka.
Fly Llama is open daily. Their hours Mondays through Wednesdays are 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursdays, 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays, noon to 11 p.m. Saturdays, and noon to 8 p.m. Sundays.
Hops and Growlers
In a nondescript building on Government Street in Ocean Springs is a hidden gem. Hops and Growlers, a family owned brewery, occupies 2339 Government Street and claims to be Ocean Springs’ first brewpub.
Hops and Growlers brews small batch beers and ciders, offering over 20 options on tap, including some non-alcoholic options.
On Tuesday nights at 7 p.m., Hops and Growlers offers trivia. They also offer a pretty unique event on some Thursday nights, science on tap, in which a local scientist or researcher is invited to present and talk about their work with Hops and Growlers patrons.
Hops and Growlers is open Tuesday through Friday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 9 p.m. The brewpub is closed on Sunday and Monday.
Lazy Magnolia Brewery
Lazy Magnolia, which opened in Kiln in 2005, claims to be Mississippi’s oldest packaging brewery. Their flagship beer, Southern Pecan, is sold in stores in 14 states.
The Lazy Magnolia taproom, dubbed The Porch, is located at 7030 Roscoe-Turner Road in Kiln. It serves some of their popular brews such as Timber Beast, an imperial IPA, and Vanilla Pecan, a brown ale, as well as a selection of brick oven fired pizzas. The Porch also offers live music on Friday nights.
Lazy Magnolia distributes to locations across the Coast. Lazy Magnolia is open Thursdays through Sundays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursdays and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays.
Lost Spring Brewing Company
Hidden behind the hustle and bustle of Government Street in Ocean Springs, Lost Spring Brewing Company is aptly named.
A combination between a cocktail lounge and a brewery, Lost Spring offers something for everyone with a selection of cocktails, wine and of course small batch beers brewed in house.
The 1699 Pale Ale and Mississippi Hippie IPA are among their most popular, with Mississippi Hippie being named the 2nd best IPA in the state by Untappd, a beer rating website.
Lost Spring hosts an annual festival, Lost Fest, as well as trivia and bingo nights. Lost Spring is located at 700 Bellande Avenue in Ocean Springs and is open Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from noon to midnight, and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
