Beloved MS Coast bakery makes last king cake and closes store. But it’s not the end
King cake season isn’t the only thing that’s over at Cheeky Monkey bakery in Biloxi.
The company posted on Facebook over the weekend the bakery on DeBuys Road is closed, effectively immediately.
“We have officially made our last King Cake and want to thank you for your support over the years,” the post said.
But it’s not the end for the bakery that started in D’Iberville 13 years ago. That location on Sangani Boulevard closed in 2016 when Jennifer Nobles opened a new location on DeBuys Road in Biloxi.
“This decision is not a sad one, but the next step in our journey to being a custom cake shop only and focusing on creating unforgettable cakes for your special events,” the post said.
Future batches of cakes will be created and baked at a cake studio attached to Nobles’ home that is under construction.
Cheeky Monkey is known for its creative cakes and cupcakes. In 2019, the bakery was the only one in Mississippi to take part in a nationwide campaign by Facebook and the Biloxi bakery gave away free vanilla cupcakes with sprinkles.
The bakery made lots of king cakes over the years and their special pulled-pork king cake was a real treat.’
“You all helped make a silly little dream become an amazing reality and we couldn’t be more grateful,” the Facebook post said, and credited the skilled staff for the legacy Cheeky Monkey created.
The company still owns the building in Biloxi and will be selling some of the supplies and equipment in the near future. Pop-up shop weekends also are in the plans.
Meanwhile, they will do special order cakes and on March 10 will begin returning messages left on the store phone.
Many fans of the bakery left messages on social media after reading the bakery is closed.
“Well, I can honestly say I am going to miss those king cakes,” one comment said.
“Y’all made my (delicious and gorgeous) wedding cake seven years ago, and I so hope you’ll be making my 30th birthday Lizzie McGuire cake this summer,” another said.
“We spent our early days of marriage stopping by and getting teeny cakes after work. We continued to incorporate you guys with gender reveal cakes for family members, random stop-ins cookies/candies, and all the seasonal items for valentines and Mardi Gras,” a third said.
