The popular Dong Phuong king cake from New Orleans is hard to come by in South Mississippi, but Vivian Nguyen was finally able to announce Tuesday that she’ll have them for a second year at Lee’s International Market in Biloxi

The grocery store at 917 Division St. will have a limited supply of the king cakes on Fridays only. Nguyen said interested customers should plan to line up early. The store opens at 7:30 a.m. Sales will be first-come, first-served.

The king cakes come from Dong Phuong Bakery, which in 2018 won a James Beard American Classics Award. The awards are reserved for ”independently owned restaurants with timeless appeal and beloved in their region for food that reflects the character and cultural traditions of its community,” the James Beard website says.

Their king cakes certainly are a hit. They sell out quickly everywhere, including at the New Orleans bakery. While nationwide shipping is available, slots have filled up for January, but a wait list is available.

Biloxi resident Mike Appe, who grew up in New Orleans, was first in line on a Friday morning in 2024 at Lee’s International Market in Biloxi to buy a king cake from Dong Phuong Bakery in the Crescent City. Dong Phuong’s king cake is considered the best by many, including Appe.

Online prices also are more than double the cost advertised at the bakery. In person purchases at Dong Phuong are under $31 for a filled king cake and under $26 for cinnamon only, the website says. Prices in South Mississippi could be slightly higher because the cakes have to be retrieved each week from New Orleans.

Waveland Pharmacy was, for years, the only Mississippi Coast reseller for the king cakes. But Lee’s is also a distributor for other Dong Phuong products and was finally able to offer the king cakes in 2024. Nguyen would like to have them available more days, but for now is able to offer them on Fridays only.

Waveland Pharmacy offers the king cakes each weekday except Tuesdays, when the bakery is closed.
