  • Carnival season brings Dong Phuong king cakes to South Mississippi retail outlet.
  • Waveland will sell; Lee’s plans to offer them again, but timing is uncertain.
  • Slots for online orders via Goldbelly are filled up, but customers can join a waitlist.

Carnival season starts Tuesday and wildly popular Dong Phuong Bakery king cakes from New Orleans will be back on the Mississippi Coast.

Waveland Pharmacy in Waveland will start carrying the king cakes on Monday, according to its Facebook page. The pharmacy on 112 Auderer Boulevard in Waveland opens at 10 a.m.

Pharmacist and owner Rudy Letellier said he became the only Dong Phuong king cake reseller years ago on the Mississippi Coast by begging the James Beard award-winning bakery to supply him.

He offers the king cakes daily except for Tuesdays, when the bakery is closed. The pharmacy also carries Randazzo’s king cakes.

In 2025, Lee’s International Market, a grocery store at 917 Division St. in Biloxi, also reached a deal with Dong Phuong, selling the king cakes on Fridays only. The grocer plans to offer the king cakes again this year, Vivian Nguyen of Lee’s said Friday, but she’s not sure when.

A favorite Mardi Gras king cake

Dong Phuong king cakes are a favorite during Carnival season, which will be short this year. Mardi Gras falls on Feb. 17.

The king cake’s icing is whipped and lighter than the usual king cake icing with granular sugar. And the dough is flaky and moister than most, customers say.

Lines form wherever they are sold, including at the bakery at 14207 Chef Menteur Highway in New Orleans, which started selling them New Year’s Day. The king cakes also sell out quickly.

Customers unwilling or unable to stand in line can try ordering online, but slots for nationwide delivery are filling up. There’s already a waitlist with Dong Phuong’s shipper, Goldbelly.

Vivian Nguyen, right, said Lee’s International Market in Biloxi, where she works, tried for years to get on the list for Dong Phuong Bakery king cakes. This year, Lee’s is finally able to offer the prized treats, but only on Fridays. She’s hoping a second day of the week can be added. Cashier Aiden Vo rang up customer Mike Appe’s king cake.

Dong Phuong Bakery responded to a comment on Facebook to say that Goldbelly will add more online order dates in February. “We do not know when,” a bakery representative wrote. “Please sign up for their waitlist to be notified.“

Prices for online orders with free shipping show a basic cinnamon cheesecake will set you back $79.95, while king cakes with fillings cost $84.95. But the waitlist is no guarantee of receiving a Dong Phuong king cake, judging from the comments.

“I need nationwide shipping since we no longer in Louisiana 😭,” one commenter wrote. “I’ve been on the waitlist, trying for the last 3 years! If someone wants to help a girl out, I’d be forever grateful!”

So, for those craving one of the king cakes in South Mississippi, best go line up at Waveland Pharmacy. Be sure to arrive early!
