Can I buy Dong Phuong on the MS Coast? Where to get New Orleans king cake locally

It’s one of the most popular king cakes in New Orleans and Mississippi. And you’ll be able to find them at a few stores in Hancock County this Mardi Gras season.

Carnival kicks off on Thursday, Jan. 6, and that’s when you can start buying Dong Phuong king cakes from Waveland Pharmacy.

Dong Phuong, an iconic bakery and restaurant in New Orleans East, is known for its unique king cakes that are a local favorite. The croissant-like dough can be filled with a variety of flavors, including cream cheese or almond cream, and is topped with a light icing and gold, purple and green sugar.

Waveland Pharmacy is the only authorized Dong Phuong king cake reseller on the Coast this year, according to the bakery’s Facebook page. However, the pharmacy will sell them on a first come, first serve basis at three of their locations:

  • Waveland Pharmacy on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays
  • The Pharmacy in Diamondhead on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays
  • Worth Repeating consignment shop in Bay St. Louis on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays

Online ordering for shipping or pick-up is available at www.shop.dpbakeshop.com. Dong Phuong also will be selling a limited number of king cakes at its Chef Menteur Highway shop on a first come, first serve basis.

The Mississippi Coast also is known for its diverse offerings of king cakes. Bakeries and shops in Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties whip up unique Mardi Gras desserts of their own.

Last year, Coast residents selected their 16 favorite places for king cake in South Mississippi, including Le Bakery in Biloxi, Fleur De Lis in Gulfport and Serious Bread in Bay St. Louis.
