Brother of Shuckers pitcher dies after ATV accident

The brother of a Biloxi Shuckers player died Friday following an ATV accident in northeast Mississippi.

Blake Woodruff, 28, sustained injuries in a four-wheeler accident on Thursday near Wheeler, which is located 25 miles northeast of Tupelo.

He is the older brother of Brandon Woodruff, a right-handed pitcher for the Double-A Biloxi Shuckers.

Blake Woodruff also was a baseball standout at Wheeler and he played for Northeast Mississippi Community College. He graduated from Mississippi State.

A funeral is set for 2 p.m. on Monday at Waters Funeral Home in Baldwyn.

In lieu of flowers, the Woodruff family set up a Gofundme.com account to raise funds for a Blake Woodruff Memorial Scholarship Fund. The scholarship is being established for a Wheeler High School graduate or NEMCC baseball player.

Brandon Woodruff, who was named the Southern League Pitcher of the Week on Monday, is on the temporary inactive list for the Shuckers. He also played baseball at Wheeler and became a 2014 draft pick by the Milwaukee Brewers after playing for three seasons at Mississippi State.
