Prep Roundup: St. Martin pounds Ocean Springs to win Region 7-6A Girls championship

D'IBERVILLE -- Late in the third quarter Friday night, St. Martin's Savannah Jones stepped up and knocked down a deep 3-pointer over two Ocean Springs defenders.

No. 1 St. Martin and No. 6 Ocean Springs went toe to toe in their first two meetings of the season, with the two games decided by three total points.

The trend didn't carry over to the post-season meeting Friday as the Lady Yellow Jackets closed out a dominating 61-39 performance to secure the Region 7-6A championship

The win marked the Lady Yellow Jackets' third straight region tournament championship, their 24th straight region win and gave them a first-round bye in the Class 6A playoffs.

"That's her. As soon as she hit that one we knew she was in the zone and there was no turning back," St. Martin coach Gina Bell said of Jones, who finished with 24 points. "I think every 3 she hit was at least three feet behind the line."

Deona Morgan finished with 19 points for St. Martin.

George County 64, St. Martin 58: The Rebels held on for a thrilling win to claim the Region 7-6A Tournament title on Friday at D'Iberville.

LaRaymond Spivery and Tyrese Fryfogle led GCHS (16-6) with 22 and 13 points respectively. Rashad Wiggins also scored 11. Stacee St. Julian led St. Martin (20-9) with 19. Johnnelius Anderson scored 14 and Jonte Moultrie scored 11.

While George County held the lead for the majority of the contest, the two teams were never very far apart. George County held a 13-9 lead after the first quarter and a 27-25 advantage at halftime.

Region 8-6A

Harrison Central girls 70, Gulfport 35: Adyn Strickland scored 17 points, De'Asia McInnis had 14, Arie'Anna Norwood added 13, Chyna Allen scored 11 as the Red Rebelettes (19-9) won the Region 8-6A girls title.

Biloxi girls 42, Hancock 35: Alexis McDaniel scored 12 points, while Breanna Riley added 11 as the Lady Indians (11-16) earned third place in the Region 8-6A consolation game. Biloxi advanced to next week's Class 6A state playoffs. Jaylin Ladner led Hancock (8-22) with eight points.

Harrison Central 85, Hancock 67: Rajun Blackston scored 21 points, Biscuit Floyd added 20 as the Red Rebels prevailed in the Region 8-6A consolation game. Anthony Barnett and Malik Blackston each had 10 for Harrison Central. Tyler Butler led the Hawks with 25 points, Justin Ladner added 20.

Region 8-5A

Long Beach 38, Gautier 34: Darnell Thornton scored all three of his points in the third overtime as Long Beach (10-14) escaped Gautier in the Region 8-5A consolation game. Monte Davis led Long Beach with 15 points. Mike McWilliams led Gautier with 16.

Long Beach girls 26, Gautier 24: Nicole Brock's jumper with 30 seconds left lifted the Lady Bearcats (6-17) past Gautier in the Region 8-5A consolation game. Emella Evans had a game-high 12 points for Gautier.

Region 7-5A

Stone girls 44, Pearl River Central 38: The Lady Tomcats advanced to the 5A state playoffs with a win at Picayune in the Region 7-5A consolation game.

Stone 59, PRC 51: The Tomcats won the Region 7-5A consolation game and advanced to the 5A state playoffs.

Region 8-4A

Bay High girls 57, Pass Christian 48: Simone Jackson had 15 points and 15 rebounds as the Lady Tigers won the Region 8-4A title. Jamaya Galloway had 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals, Breanna Fountain scored 13.

Moss Point girls 45, East Central 26: LaMiracle Sims scored 23 points as the Lady Tigers earned third place in the Region 8-4A tournament at St. Stanislaus. Celia Rogers added 10 points for the Lady Tigers. Sania Wells led the Lady Hornets with 14 points. Both teams will be on the road in the 4A state playoffs Monday.

Moss Point 75, Vancleave 57: Moss Point Tigers beat Vancleave, finishing third in the Region 8-4A Tournament. David Evans led the Tigers with 21 points, Aristotle Rush added 18. Marcus Brown scored 12, and Marquis Plainer had 11. Trevor Davis and Nic Brewer scored 15 points each for the Bulldogs.

Region 8-3A

St. Patrick girls 62, West Marion 42: Morgan McCrea scored 27 points, Anna Claire Colson added 10 for the Lady Irish in the Region 8-3A tournament consolation game.
