Police: Man accused in Gulfport shooting also shot himself
GULFPORT -- A man suspected in the shooting of another man during an argument also shot himself when he tried to conceal his gun, and had drugs in his possession when he went to receive medical help, Gulfport police Sgt. Damon McDaniel said.
Investigators believe Dominique Marquette Mikell, 23, and Phyllis Elaine Frazier, 46, were arguing with Frazier's ex-boyfriend outside the New Village Apartments in the 2800 block of 34th Avenue when Mikell shot the man, McDaniel said.
Mikell allegedly shot himself in the groin area while trying to hide the gun, and Frazier, said to be a felon, reportedly took the gun from Mikell before he drove away.
The shooting was reported about 10:45 a.m.
Frazier's ex-boyfriend was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital at Gulfport for a wound that was not life-threatening.
Frazier was trying to leave the area when police arrived, and officers found her with the weapon used in the shooting, McDaniel said. She has a felony conviction, he said. Police arrested her on a charge of possession of a weapon by a felon.
Police later learned Mikell had gone to a hospital emergency room. While he was being treated, police reportedly found him in possession of marijuana.
Police arrested him on charges of aggravated assault and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
Mikell and Frazier, both of Gulfport, were booked at the police department and taken to the Harrison County jail.
Justice Court Judge Melvin Ray set bonds that total $70,000 for Mikell and a $25,000 bond for Frazier.
