GEORGE COUNTY -- Law enforcement officers shot and killed a man early Sunday after a high-speed chase ended in a crash, officials said.
The name of the deceased was being withheld pending notification of family, said Warren Strain of the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.
The shooting occurred shortly after midnight after George County deputies tried to conduct a traffic stop at Old Highway 63 and Mississippi 63, Strain said in news release. The driver failed to stop and a state trooper joined in the pursuit, he said.
The pursuit ended in a crash on Mississippi 26 at Henry Cochran Road, just west of Lucedale.
Never miss a local story.
Officers "were forced to discharge their weapons" and a "male subject was killed," Strain said.
It wasn't clear if the driver was a man or a teenager.
District Attorney Tony Lawrence told the Sun Herald a female sustained minor injuries in the crash.
Strain said MBI agents and a state crime-scene unit went to the scene.
The George County Sheriff's Office has turned the case over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, a standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting.
The Mississippi Medical Examiner's Office in Pearl will perform an autopsy, Strain said.
The pursuit was classified as a high-speed chase, said Shonna Pierce, spokeswoman for the George County Sheriff's Office.
No other details have been released, including the reason for the attempted traffic stop.
