Moss Point product Devin Booker has made quite the name for himself in his first season at Kentucky, and he deserves to be listed among the best in the SEC according to at least one prominent sports writer.
Rick Bozich knows basketball. The long-time sports writer in Louisville, Ky., now works for one of the city's TV stations, WDRB. He has covered 31 Final Fours and is a member of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame.
On Wednesday, he sat down to hash out the major story lines so far for SEC basketball. Booker, a freshman guard, features prominently in his piece.
He lists a “Fab Five” for the top five players in the SEC this season: 1. Karl Anthony-Towns, Kentucky; 2. Willie Cauley-Stein, Kentucky; 3. Bobby Portis, Arkansas; 4. Devin Booker, Kentucky; 5. Jordan Mickey, Louisiana State.
Bozich also has a “Fab Five” for the league's top freshmen and Kentucky unsurprisingly dominates the list: 1. Towns, Kentucky. 2. Booker, Kentucky; 3. Tyler Ulis, Kentucky; 4. Trey Lyles, Kentucky; 5. Riley LaChance, Vanderbilt.
Booker may at best have an outside shot at SEC Player of the Year, but he's in the discussion. If the 6-foot-6 guard closes strong, he very well could be the SEC Freshman of the Year. He's already been named SEC Freshman of the Week four times.
Booker had 18 points and seven rebounds in Kentucky's 66-48 win over Tennessee on Tuesday.
He is now leading Kentucky in scoring at 11.0 points a game and has hit 45-out-100 3-pointers this season.
