Report: MSU defensive coordinator leaving for Florida

Mississippi State defensive coordinator Geoff Collins is set to take the same position at Florida, Sports Illustrated reported Tuesday.

The SI report says that the deal has not been finalized yet.

Collins would take over under new Florida head coach Jim McElwain, who joined the Gators from Colorado State.

Collins defense was one of the better units in the SEC this season and ranked 10th in the nation in points allowed at 19.4.

Collins' departure comes after MSU head coach Dan Mullen was critical of his defensive staff after the 31-17 loss to Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl on Nov. 29.

No. 7 MSU (10-2) will play No. 12 Georgia Tech (10-3) at 7 p.m. on Dec. 31 in the Capital One Orange Bowl.
