Monken 'hopeful' to have Mullens back at QB for USM

Southern Miss head coach Todd Monken said Monday that he is "hopeful" to have starting quarterback Nick Mullens for Saturday's game at UTEP following an ankle injury.

Mullens suffered the injury on the opening drive of Saturday's 31-20 loss to Louisiana Tech in Hattiesburg. Mullens did not return to the game when it became apparent he couldn't push off the injured ankle.

Monken said the X-ray results on the quarterback's ankle came back negative, but he has been dealing with swelling.

Monken said that Mullens will be evaluated starting Tuesday.

Redshirt senior Cole Weeks replaced Mullens during Saturday's loss. He completed 28-of-45 passes for 338 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

If Mullens is unable to go Saturday, Weeks will get his first career start.

Mullens, a sophomore, has completed 59.9 percent of his passes for 1,950 yards, 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions this season.

Southern Miss is 3-5 and 1-3 in Conference USA.
