USM picked to finish 5th in C-USA West

Southern Miss has been picked to finish fifth in the Conference USA West by the league's coaches, C-USA announced on Wednesday.

North Texas was picked as a slight favorite to win the West in the preseason poll while Marshall is the heavy favorite to repeat as the East champion.

USM received 24 points in the voting, just ahead of UTEP and one spot behind Louisiana Tech.

The Golden Eagles, who are coming off a 1-11 season, were shutout on the preseason All-Conference USA Team.

Marshall senior quarterback Rakeem Cato was chosen as the preseason C-USA Offensive Player of the Year and Marshall defensive lineman James Rouse was named preseason C-USA Defensive Player of the Year.
