10 players from Miss. schools earn CFL spots

A total of 10 players from Mississippi colleges survived final cuts Saturday in the Canadian Football League.

The CFL is set to open the season this week with Thursday's 7 p.m. game between the Toronto Argonauts and Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Former George County and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College star Alonzo Lawrence was likely the biggest name to be cut over the weekend. The Argonauts cut the defensive back, who attended Alabama and Southern Miss but never played in a game at the FBS level.

The Edmonton Eskimos cut former Mississippi State receiver Brandon McRae and former Jackson State receiver Jaymar Johnson was cut by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
