USM gets back on track with win over Morehead St.

The Southern Miss basketball team played one of its better games of late in a 74-60 win over Morehead State at Reed Green Coliseum Wednesday night.

USM was poor on offense in its last two games against Div. I opponents - a win over Houston Baptist and a loss at Louisville.

Against a good Morehead State team, Southern Miss shot 46.3 percent from the field and converted 24 turnovers into 27 points.

Neil Watson led USM with 19 points and five assists, helping close out the game with an important three-point play in the final two minutes.

USM never trailed by less than five points after it jumped out to an 8-0 advantage, a rare quick start for the Golden Eagles (7-1).

Southern Miss played without senior guard Jerrold Brooks, who was suspended for one game after he left the locker room without permission after the loss at Louisville on Friday.

“He went down to the lobby to get a Coke,” Tyndall said. “We saw him and I told him, 'That's it, I'm tired of playing games.' Hopefully he'll learn from that mistake.”

Joining Watson in double figures were Daveon Boardingham with 12 points, Michael Craig with 11 points and nine rebounds and Chip Armelin with 10 points.
