Pascagoula's Watson signs college scholarship

Pascagoula senior Markeisha Watson has long been committed to West Florida, and she made the decision official on Wednesday to attend the Pensacola school.

Watson signed her letter of intent at the Pascagoula High School library surrounded by family, teammates and coaches.

"It's a dream come true," Watson said. "I'm just blessed to be in the position I am today."

Watson led the Panthers with an average of 14.3 points a game, leading her team to the Class 5A state semifinals in Jackson.

West Florida, a Division II program, went 6-21 last year and Watson has plans to get on the court quickly for the Argonauts.

"I'm trying to start right away," Watson said. "I'll play the two or three and they'll rotate me in and out."

Pascagoula coach LaShonda Smith sees a high ceiling for Watson at the college level.

"This is my first year with her. She only got to play the second semester last year." Smith said. "I just feel like we're scratching the surface of how good of a player she can be. There's untapped talent there and the coaches at West Florida will bring that out of her."
