BLOG: USM president follows coach, buys 1,000 NIT tickets for students

Southern Miss basketball coach Donnie Tyndall stepped up to the plate and now it's incoming president Rodney Bennett's turn.

USM announced Thursday that Bennett has secured 1,000 tickets for students to Monday's 9 p.m. NIT contest against Louisiana Tech at Reed Green Coliseum.

Bennett raised the funds for the tickets through private donations.

“The enthusiasm that the Southern Miss student body is demonstrating for this basketball team and coaching staff makes a difference,” Bennett said in a press release. “Coach Tyndall alluded to the considerable role the crowd played in Wednesday night’s win, and we want to ensure this historic season continues for as long as possible. I’m looking forward to joining Southern Miss students, alumni and fans for Monday’s game.”

Tyndall purchased 1,000 tickets for Wednesday's 78-71 win over Charleston Southern and USM students showed up in strong numbers as part of a crowd of 5,018.

The first 1,000 students to Monday's game will have to present a valid student ID to get a ticket. Admission for any students after that will be $5 each.

Students can begin lining up at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
