White's triple-double helps end Gulfport's season

Six-foot-11 post men are hard to find, and Madison Central has a good one.

Junior center Joniah White posted a triple-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 12 blocks to lead Madison Central to a 51-43 win over Gulfport Wednesday afternoon in the Class 6A semifinals at the Mississippi Coliseum.

Even when White wasn't blocking shots, he was altering shots just by his presence near the basket. There were numerous times when Gulfport players threw shots toward the basket simply hoping they would avoid White's long reach.

Gulfport shot just 29.3 percent from the field, a season low.

"It wasn't that hard getting (to the rim), but once you got there, Joniah was standing there," Gulfport forward Otis Harvey said. "So he altered a lot of shots."

Gulfport senior Eddie Lee did a good job in the post battling with White and ended up with a game-high 14 points to go with 11 rebounds.

Gulfport sophomore point guard Jahshire Hardnett had to deal with a determined Madison Central double-team all game and ended the game with just three makes on 19 attempts from the field. He had eight points, seven rebounds and a single assist.

Gulfport led 33-22 with 1:31 left in the third quarter before Madison Central closed out the game on a 29-10 run.

Gulfport, which will return four starters next season, ends the season with a 29-5 mark and seeking its first state title since 2002.
