St. Stanislaus won its third consecutive Mississippi High School Fleet Race Championship on Sunday at the Gulfport Yacht Club.
The Rockachaws also won the Gulf Coast High School Sailing Championship.
St. Stanislaus co-captain Charlie Breath is thrilled to end his prep career with another state championship. Gulfport finished second, St. Patrick was third.
“It’s been fun to sail with this team at St. Stanislaus,” Breath said. “I enjoyed making friends for life. Not many high schools have sailing teams like us.”
Added St. Stanislaus freshman co-captain Thomas Duffy: “Since sailing is the only sport I participate in at St. Stanislaus, I put in a lot of hard work and effort into it.”
St. Stanislaus coach Dan Zwerg attributes the Rockachaws’ success to chemistry. St. Patrick High School won the state's first five sailing titles, but St. Stanislaus has taken the past three.
“It’s a fantastic, solid and highly-competitive team,” Zwerg said. “The players have great team spirit and work well together. The older players help the younger players.”
Freshman Michael Burns won all 12 of the events he competed in this season for the Rockachaws.
“It’s an honor to sail on this team,” Burns said. “We’re always working hard.”
The sailing championships were hosted by the Gulfport Yacht Club.
