Who would Sun Herald sports staffers like the Saints to pick first?
Here's who Sun Herald sports staff members think the New Orleans Saints should select with their first-round pick, the 12th overall selection, Thursday:
Scott Hawkins, Sun Herald Sports Editor
Ole Miss DT Robert Nkemdiche: No doubt the Saints need to beef up their defense, so I would like their top pick to be a good defensive player. If I had my druthers, I'd pick Robert Nkemdiche. Who wouldn't want the former Ole Miss Landshark leader on the Saints defense?
James Jones, Sun Herald Sports Lead
Memphis QB Paxton Lynch: The Saints need defensive help, but the Memphis quarterback may be too good to pass up.
Patrick Magee, Sun Herald Sportswriter
Ole Miss WR Laquon Treadwell: While an improved defense is a necessity in 2016, the Saints need to become more dynamic at the receiver position. I believe Ole Miss receiver Laquon Treadwell would be a great addition to the receiving corps. Treadwell isn't a burner at the receiver position, but neither was Marques Colston. Drew Brees needs receiving options and Treadwell is the best available at pick No. 12.
Patrick Ochs, Sun Herald Sportswriter
Clemson DE Shaq Lawson: It's pretty safe to assume that if the Saints retain their first-round pick and don't move back they'll go with a defensive player. Lawson would be a great fit for New Orleans. Lawson is supposed to be a good character guy -- very important these days in the NFL. The Saints should be able to just turn Lawson loose and let him cause havoc in opposing backfields.
