One of the first officers to arrive on the Will Smith shooting scene found a semiautomatic Ruger SR45 handgun on the hood of an orange Hummer with one round left in the chamber and an empty magazine, according to an initial police report released Tuesday.

By the time Officer Amanda Williams arrived on the scene, she wrote in the report, the gun's magazine had been removed.

That brief report reveals few new details about the investigation into Smith’s death. But it does state that the weapon – apparently the same one police believe 28-year-old Cardell Hayes used to shoot Smith – came back “not stolen” in a search through the National Crime Information Center.

Hayes, when he was arrested on a drug and gun violation in 2010, was found with a .45-caliber Ruger P345, according to another police report.

Williams also documented what she first saw on the scene near the corner of Sophie Wright Place and Felicity Street on the night of April 9: a woman lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to her right leg, and another victim, a man, partially inside the front driver’s side of a Mercedes SUV.

Those references are to Smith’s wife, Racquel, and to Smith himself.
