The Biloxi Shuckers let a late lead slip away in Thursday night’s rubber match with the Jacksonville Suns, falling 8-5 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

It was the Shuckers’ sixth consecutive series loss. Jacksonville won the season series with an 11-9 record against Biloxi.

Shuckers relief pitcher Junior Rincon (0-1) entered the eighth for his second inning of work with a 5-4 lead and gave up back-to-back singles to Brian Anderson and Alex Glenn before walking Garrett Weber to load the bases with no outs.

Stephen Peterson relieved Rincon to face Peter Mooney, but issued a run-scoring walk to tie the game at five. The Suns then hit into a double play, but Peterson walked the next three batters as Jacksonville took a 6-5 lead.

Mitch Lambson relieved Peterson and gave up a two-run single to J.T. Riddle as Biloxi (15-25, 54-55) fell behind 8-5.

Biloxi’s only lead of the game came in the seventh. The Shuckers scored three runs for a 5-4 lead against Jacksonville (19-21, 49-61).

Javier Betancourt drilled a two-run homer to left to tie the game at four and Brett Phillips’ run-scoring single put Biloxi ahead.

The game was delayed for 18 minutes after the lights went out to start the bottom of the fifth.

The Shuckers’ Jorge Lopez, the 2015 Southern League Pitcher of the Year, lasted five innings in his second Double-A start this season. Lopez allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks but set a career high with 10 strikeouts.
