The night after a dramatic come-from-behind victory, the Biloxi Shuckers were unable to solve the Southern League’s ERA leader Grayson Long on Wednesday in a 2-0 loss to the Mobile BayBears at MGM Park.
With 12 games remaining, the Shuckers are three games behind the first-place Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in the South Division.
Biloxi got a solid start from Freddy Peralta, who turned in 4.0 scoreless innings while striking out three batters. The 21-year-old righty was limited to 63 pitches as he nears the end of his second full professional season.
Peralta was relieved by Luis Ortiz (4-7), who made second consecutive relief appearance after spending most of the season in the starting rotation. The righty pitched well, but allowed four hits and the game's first run in the sixth inning to give Mobile a 1-0 lead.
Taylor Williams delivered a scoreless eighth inning on just five pitches, but Jorge Lopez allowed a big insurance run in the ninth to double Mobile's lead. That would be too much for the Shuckers to overcome, as Long (8-6) allowed three harmless singles over 7.0 shutout innings and Alex Klonowski returned from the disabled list to earn a six-out save. Long ends the night on top of the Southern League with a 2.62 ERA and ran his road scoreless streak to 28.1 innings.
Jake Gatewood was 1-for-3 on Wednesday night and has earned his second five-game hitting streak in two weeks with the Shuckers. The 21-year-old has hit in 10 of 11 games, batting .314.
The Shuckers will look to even up their series against Mobile at 6:35 .m. Thursday night as Jon Perrin faces off against Mobile's Jake Jewell for a 6:35 pm start.
