The Bay-Waveland School District brought one of its own back into the fold Tuesday with the hire of Vernon Powell as interim athletics director.
A Bay High graduate, Powell spent his whole career in education.
From 1979 to 1987, Powell served in a number of roles at St. Stanislaus, including football coach, track coach and athletics director. He later taught in San Antonio and Rio Hondo. He retired four years ago and was back on the Coast when Bay High’s position became available.
“I felt like it was a calling and thought I could bring something to the table for the athletes of Bay St. Louis,” Powell said Wednesday. “This is exciting. Not many people get the opportunity (to go back to your alma mater). Some people go their whole lifetime, so it’s a special time and special opportunity.”
Powell’s familiarity with the Coast allowed Bay to move quickly after former AD Will Seymour announced his resignation two weeks ago.
“We needed someone with experience to come in and be ready to hit the ground running since school has already started,” acting superintendent Vikki Landry said. “We wanted to assure our parents and coaches that they have the support they need.”
Landry said Powell will work closely with Seymour to get caught up to speed. His official first day is Sept. 1.
