The East Central football team started off the season with a 61-21 thrashing of St. Luke's from Mobile, Alabama, in Hurley Friday night.

East Central, which only had 33 plays on offense, was led by junior running back Tony Brown, who had 11 carries for 148 yards and three touchdowns.

"I was proud of the way we played in the first game," East Central coach Seth Smith said. "There are some mistakes we still have to clean up with some bobbled snaps and missed assignments. I'm glad we won, but we have to get better."

Jessie Bradley added five carries for 90 yards and a touchdown and Ryan Evans ran five times for 70 yards.

East Central led 20-0 after one quarter and had little trouble finishing off St. Luke's thanks to an opportunistic defense and an efficient offense. The Hornets had 348 yards of offense and created four turnovers on defense.

East Central also showed it could pass the ball a little with junior tight end Brad Cumbest catching four passes for 108 yards and a touchdown.

Senior defensive back Glenn Evans added an 83-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

East Central (1-0) will host Stone High (1-0) for a 7 p.m. game on Friday.
