Ocean Springs, Southern Miss product Creel lands D1 baseball coaching job
Former Southern Miss and Ocean Springs baseball player Travis Creel has earned his first job as a Division I coach.
Creel was announced this week as a member of the staff at Louisiana Tech, where he will coach first base, work with infielders, assist with hitting and serve as the director of camps.
Creel worked for two seasons at Jones County Junior College, helping the Bobcats to the 2016 NJCAA Div. II national championship.
Creel took a redshirt during the USM baseball team's run to the College World Series in 2009. He proved valuable as a utility infielder for the Golden Eagles from 2010-2013.
“We are so thrilled that Travis will be joining us at Louisiana Tech,” newly-hired Louisiana Tech coach Lane Burroughs said in a press release. “Travis is a winner. I recruited him out of high school and saw him continuously get better as a player through college. He played under two men that I consider mentors and family in Corky Palmer and Scott Berry. He has also worked alongside Dillon Sudduth, Chris Kirtland and obviously, Coach Ostrander, three men I have the utmost respect for.”
Burroughs recruited Creel to USM while serving as an assistant coach there.
