Trent Dilfer: Myles Brennan can lead my team

Most who have been around Myles Brennan on the field can vouch for his no-bull attitude.

Blonde haired and smiling off the field, he could easily pass as some laid back surfer dude. When he suits up for St. Stanislaus, Brennan is anything but laid back.

Elite 11 coaches found out first hand last month just how intense the LSU commit can be.

Avoiding a rapidly collapsing pass rush and hitting a receiver in stride is nothing for most of the country’s elite prep quarterbacks. But what about sitting in a locker room with a number of coaches and former quarterbacks grilling you about anything from “what’s one thing you want to change about yourself” to “if you were on a bus that lost its breaks, where would you want to be sitting?” That’s a different kind of pressure.

Each of the Elite 11 finalists in Los Angeles last month went through a series of “combine style” interview session, where they were peppered with questions to try and knock them off their game.

Bleacher Report has been releasing a series of webisodes from the Elite 11 daily, with Thursday’s focusing on the combine interview session, where Brennan shined.

Elite 11 organizer Brian Stumpf said Brennan’s competitive nature is second to none.

Former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer described Brennan as “intense. Jaw clinched.”

It was at the end of the session — with a spot at this week’s The Opening Finals in Beaverton, Ore., on the line — that Brennan made “the promise.”

“I’ve kind of been the underdog throughout this whole recruiting process in general. I come here, same type of thing and it fires me up,” Brennan said. “I’m going to earn that spot in Oregon. I can promise y’all that.”

As Dilfer described, Brennan essentially “dropped the mic” and walked out after that.

“Hair stood up on my arms when he walked out of the room,” he said. “I’m like, yeah, that guy can lead my team.”

Katrina story: The webisode also included Brennan telling his family’s Hurricane Katrina story.

Like so many on the Coast, the Brennans were displaced for years before returning home.

“Hurricane Katrina was something none of us expected,” he said. “My parents told us to pack a few pairs of clothes and we’ll be back. Couple weeks later (we) came back to a lot full of sand. Lost a house, lost all the childhood pictures and everything. The whole nine yards. Moved down to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and bought a boat to re-start.”

Brennan is currently competing in Beaverton at The Opening Finals, which is a collection of some of the nation’s top rising senior football players who are put through a number of drills as well as a 7-on-7 tournament. An Elite 11 MVP will also be named at the conclusion of the competition Sunday.
