DIAMONDHEAD -- Caledonia captured the MHSAA Class 4A state championship Thursday at Diamondhead's Cardinal Course, holding on to its first-day lead and edging out defending champion St. Stanislaus by eight strokes.

St. Stanislaus, the 2014 and '15 4A champion, started Thursday in third place -- 13 strokes behind Caledonia. The Rockachaws made up ground on Day 2, tying Caledonia's first-day score and tournament best of 337, edging past East Central and Pontotoc.

"Today we played well," St. Stanislaus coach Bob Saucier said. "Yesterday we had a very rough day. We shot our highest score (350) of the year yesterday, and that hurt us. Caledonia is a good team; we spotted them 13 shots. You can't make up that much room on a good team."

The Rockachaws' team of Vincent Almerico, Patrick Bowers, Matthew Saucier, Penn St. Paul and Walker Montjoy shot a 687 over the two days, led by Almerico's 161 and Saucier's 168.

The championship was the first for Caledonia and coach Bradley Tate. Last year the Confederates finished second to St. Stanislaus.

"We finished second last year, and we didn't lose anybody," said Tate. "We knew we had a good shot coming in. We didn't play our best golf today, but well enough to win. We had some bad moments, where I had to get them back focused, to forget about the past hole and concentrate on the next one coming up."

Pontotoc's Denver Russell was the tournament's low medalist, shooting 151 for the two days. Caledonia's Hunter Logan finished second with a 158. Almerico finished third overall.

"I didn't play well," said Russell. "But I just scored, made some putts. I drove the ball really well."

Rounding out team finishes: Pontotoc (713), East Central (715), Northeast Lauderdale (719), New Albany (721), West Lauderdale (754), Purvis (762), Corinth (765) and Lafayette (781).
