Prep roundup: Gulfport, St. Martin girls win Region golf titles
St. Martin's girls golf team won the Class III, Region 7-District 8 championship Thursday at Shell Landing in Gautier with a score of 180, edging out D'Iberville (190).
D'Iberville's Hannah Levi was the low medalist with a 71. St. Martin's Sydney Cato (83) and George County's Camryn Smith (84) rounded out the all-district team. Ocean Springs' Jolie Hughes shot a 98 to advance to the Class III State Championship as an individual. Other members of St. Martin's team include Jordan Wescovich and Lyndsey Wescovich. Hassan Dorsey and Rachel Boulanger round out D'Iberville's team.
The Oaks in Pass Christian will host the Class III championship May 2-3.
Gulfport girls win first district championship: Gulfport's girls golf team claimed the Class III, Region 8-District 8 tournament title Thursday at the Great Southern Golf Club.
GHS edged Biloxi with a score of 200, to the Lady Indians' 205. Hancock (237) finished third. Claire Richardson and Megan Wadsworth both shot 100 to land on the all-district team. Alexis Arnoult shot 109. Biloxi's Margeret Lee was the low medalist with a 99. Lyla McCowin (106) and Riley Jackson (132) rounded out the team. Whitney Eakins (106) led HHS. Sonni Scarbrough (131) and Isabella Scardino (137) rounded out Hancock's team.
Our Lady Academy wins District title: OLA won the 2016 1A District girls golf tournament at Grand Bear with a 174 team score. Callee Breland was low medalist with an 80. Kati Albright was second with a 94 and Gabby Zimmerman shot a 110. St. Patrick came in second at 220.
Tennis
St. Stanislaus/Our Lady Academy advance: St. Stanislaus/Our Lady Academy defeated Northeast Jones 6-1 in the first round of the Region 8-4A tennis playoffs.
Boys singles winner was James Estrada; girls singles winner was Hayden Henry; mixed doubles winners were Hunner Drake and Madison Wawrek; boys doubles winners were Mitchell Walk and Dustin Bosch; girls doubles winners were Grace Nicaud and Claire Escher and Paige Palazzo and Laura Grace Ritten. St. Stanislaus/OLA advances to play Florence next at 3 p.m. on April 28.
