LONG BEACH -- The 200-meter dash turned out to be the defining moment in both the Region 4-5A boys and girls track and field meets Thursday at Long Beach High School.

Long Beach's Allanah Turner and Destiny Pickens went 1-2 in the 200 dash as the Bearcats took the lead for good in winning the Region 4-5A girls championship.

Gautier's James Hudson took second in the 200 dash as the Gators regained the lead from Long Beach, then held off Hattiesburg in the final event -- the 1,600-meter relay -- to win the Region 4-5A boys title.

The top four finishers in each event advance to the Class 5A South State meet which will be held at Long Beach on April 30 in conjunction with the 6A South State meet.

Long Beach led the girls with 142 points. Hattiesburg was second with 131, followed by West Harrison (105), Pascagoula (78), Gautier (48), Pearl River Central (23), Picayune (22) and Stone (2).

Gautier scored 111 points in winning the boys meet. Hattiesburg had 109 and Long Beach 105, followed by West Harrison (94), Picayune (68), Pascagoula (56), Pearl River Central (6) and Stone (2).

"I stayed focused on the finish line," Long Beach's Turner said after the pivotal 200-meter dash win in a time of 25.71 seconds. "I did my best. I am proud of my teammates. Now we are going to try to go to state and win."

Turner and Pickens also went 2-3 in the 100-meter dash, and Pickens won the 400 dash.

Other individual Long Beach winners were Samantha Steele in the pole vault (7-feet-6), Ash Osness in the 3,200-meter run (12:53.24), Anastasia Thibodeaux in the 300 hurdles (49.30), Pickens in the 400 (57.42) as well as the winning 400- and 800-meter relay teams.

"I'm very happy, we had a lot of young ladies come through tonight," Long Beach coach Olan Welch said. "It was a team effort. I don't want to leave out my 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

"The way to win South State is numbers with as many kids in as many events as possible."

The two individual double winners at the meet were Long Beach's Tim Lacey (long jump and high jump) and Hattiesburg's Jaylon Jackson (110 and 300 hurdles). Jackson won a photo finish in the 300 hurdles over West Harrison's Demarious Ray -- 41.924 seconds to 41.928 seconds.

Gautier coach Paul Purvis was proud of how his team battled to the win. Gautier won two individual events -- Percy Jackson in the triple jump (43-6 ½ inches) and Cameron Tingle in the 3200 run (11:13.59).

"It was a great meet," Purvis said. "Our kids nickeled and dimed all night long. They got great points. They fought, battled. The Long Beach kids battled and fought as well. This is region is really, really good.

"Going 1-2-3 in the triple jump was fantastic. We had a lot of kids bowed up and while some may not have qualified, they beat someone to get fifth. They were getting points. They put in a great team effort."
