The Long Beach High School Lady Bearcats varsity track and field team captured the Division 8-5A team championship Tuesday night at Long Beach's Lumpkin-Magee Stadium. Lady Bearcats freshman Destiny Pickens took first in the 200-meter dash & 400-meter dash. Long Beach eighth grader Ash Osness took first in both the 2-mile run and 1-mile run.
Other Long Beach girls who won events were: Anastasia Thibodeaux in the 300-meter hurdles and Destiny Smith in the pole vault. The Lady Bearcats also swept first place in the 400-meter, 800-meter and 1-mile relay events. Lady Bearcat relay event winners were Allanah Turner, Alaziah Turner, Destiny Pickens, Muonie Pickens, Nicole Brock, Malaika Lowe, Anastasia Thibodeaux and Makiah Smith. Long Beach will host Region 4-5A Track & Field Championship at 3:45 Thursday.
Gulfport advances: The Admnirals defeat Oak Grove 6-1 in 1st round of 6A state playoffs. Girls Singles winner was Megan Bankston. Mixed Doubles winners were Chad Guiterrez and Maureen Maher. Boys 1 and 2 doubles winners were Gage Switzer/ Gordy Verrett, and Jay Warren/Jonathon Switzer. Girls 1 and 2 doubles winners were Devyn Alexander/Julia Richardson and Libby Switzer/ Kate Hopkins. Gulfport advances to play at Pearl on Friday at 4 p.m.
