Prep Roundup: Long Beach sweeps Bearcat Track Invitational

Long Beach swept the boys and girls championships at the Bearcat Invitational Track & Field Meet on Thursday at Lumpkin-Magee Stadium. Individual event winners for Long Beach were Destiny Pickens (100 meter, 200 meter and 400 meter dashes), Anastasia Thibodeaux (300 meter hurdle), Jarius Warren (shot put), Tim Lacey (long jump), Monte Davis (400 meter dash), Samantha Steele and Mike Cropper (pole vault).

The Lady Bearcats also claimed first place finishes in the 800- and 1,600 meter relays. Long Beach relay winners were Destiny Pickens, Nicole Brock, Makiah Smith, Malaika Lowe, Brianna Anderson and Anastasia Thibodeaux. The Long Beach boys were also winners in two relay events. Those relay team members were Michael Filibeck, Chase Burkley, Kade Dixon and Carlin Taylor in the 2-mile relay and Monte Davis, Jadarious Perkins, Jervey Foxworth and Landon Houser in the 1,600 meter relay.

Archery

Coast shines at AIMS: Three Coast teams finished as state runner-ups at the Archery in Mississippi Schools State championship on Thursday: Our Lady Academy (1A), Picayune (5A) and St. Martin (6A). Other top five performers were Stone finishing fourth in 5A, and Hancock fifth in 6A.

Baseball

Hattiesburg 6, Gulfport 5: Gulfport led 2-1 after four innings Thursday, but Hattiesburg's Joseph Gray hit a grand slam in the fifth. Gulfport fought back to tie the game 5-5 after six, but the Tigers' C.J. Anderson put Hattiesburg back ahead for good with a solo homer.

Softball

St. Martin 4, Ocean Springs 3: Rebecca Anderson came up with the game-winning triple in the top of the seventh to lift the Lady Yellow Jackets (9-6, 3-0). Anderson and Ashley Warrick both finished with two hits and an RBI. Emily Stansbury had a team-high three hits for SMHS.

East Central 11, Vancleave 1: Madie Sparks (7-0) surrendered four hits in six innings. Casey Duncan tallied two hits with a double ECHS (11-3) on Thursday. Kaleigh Fillingame was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Gulfport 3, Hancock 1: Jessica tossed a four-hitter to lead Gulfport past Hancock on Thursday. Lee also had two hits. Allison Rivers and Taylor Chambliss led GHS with two hits and an RBI.
