Gulfport senior baseball star Alex Nelms and St. Patrick senior softball standout Emma Rae Castanedo are the Sun Herald Players of the Week after a pair of strong individual performances last week.
Nelms is the Boys Player of the Week following a dominant pitching performance in a 2-0 win over George County a week ago. He retired the first 18 batters he faced and finished with a 1-hitter in the Region 8-7/6A victory.
Nelms (4-1) gave up a hit to start the seventh and walked the next man before retiring the next three batters. The right-hander has a 0.52 ERA with 25 strikeouts and five walks in 27 innings this season.
The Southern Miss signee was also 6-for-15 at the plate as the Admirals (10-4, 2-2) finished the week with a 4-1 record.
Castanedo, St. Patrick's shortstop, is this week's Girls Player of the Week after putting up some strong numbers at the plate last week.
She went 7-for-10 with a home run, five doubles and 12 RBIs in two blowout wins for the Fighting Irish last week.
The Mississippi College signee is batting .484 this season.
St. Patrick (9-0) beat Perry Central 20-3 and West Marion 16-1.
