After Saturday's performance, D'Iberville coach Joshua Ladner expects his group of powerlifters to once again contend for a Class 6A state title.

The Warriors edged Gulfport 50-45 to win Saturday's Class 6A South State title for a third straight year. Oak Grove, Harrison Central and Jim Hill rounded out the top five with 39, 18 and 16 points respectively.

"It was a battle," Ladner said.

D'Iberville's Cade Ross was named the heavyweight lifter of the meet after posting state records in the squat and deadlift with 655 and 685 pounds respectively. He also tied the South State mark by totaling 1,655 total points.

"Some kids will allow success to go to their heads and they may relax. He doesn't," Ladner said. "He hasn't slowed down a bit. In fact, it has probably motivated him to work even harder.

"That's what separates him from being mediocre or great to one of a kind."

Oak Grove's Jalyne Quinn was named the lightweight lifter of the meet after racking up 1,320 points in the 148-pound weight class.

Ross wasn't the only record breaker on Saturday. Harrison Central's Jordon Beaton eclipsed the state mark with an 800-pound squat. He went on to win the 275-pound class with 1,790 points.

The top three lifters from each class qualified for the Class 6A meet on April 16 at the Mississippi Coliseum.

Coast lifters to qualify from each class included: St. Martin's Alonte Hughes with 700 points in the 114-pound class; Gulfport's Cain Sudduth (1,030) and D'Iberville's Austin Fountain (955) in the 123-pound class; Gulfport's Jaquan Foster (1,070) in the 132-pound class; St. Martin's Tyreke Nichols (1,060) and Chad Bosarge (1,040) in the 148-pound class; D'Iberville's Khalil McCray (1,270) and Garrett Stratton (1,205), and Gulfport's Carlos Thomas (1,150) in the 165-pound class; George County's Khalil Burns (1,335), Ocean Springs' Socrates Meza-Ayala (1,270) and Gulfport's Keenan Magee (1,135) in the 181-pound class; Ross (1,655) and Gulfport's Orlando Brown (1,290) in the 198-pound class; D'Iberville's Micah Booker (1,545) and Harrison Central's Aaron Rainey (1,540) in the 220-pound class; D'Iberville teammates Wyatt Delancey (1,585) and Mike McCoy (1585), and Gulfport's D.J.
