Prep roundup: George County wins first major golf championship of season
Sixteen of the Coast's high school golf teams competed Tuesday in the first major golf championship of the season at Diamondhead Country Club.
George County took home the title, edging host St. Stanislaus by a score of 327 to 330.
George County's team consisted of Isaac Marshall, Sean Smith, Landen Rucker, Cy Smith and River Maskew. Marshall and Sean Smith tied Biloxi's Miles Jackson for medalist honors at 79, while Cy Smith was one shot back at 80.
The rest of the DHSGI All-Tournament Team included Hancock's Tyler Haskins (80), St. Stanislaus' Matthew Saucier (81), Vincent Almerico (82) and Penn St. Paul (83), as well as Hancock's Colby Entriken (83) and Gulfport's John Michael Miller (83).
Baseball
West Harrison 9, Moss Point 0 (6 1/3 inn.): Hunter Simmons and Tate Parker combined to throw a no-hitter Tuesday night. Simmons struck out four in five innings and Parker whiffed three in 1 1/3. Brandon Parker drove in one; Kasey Donaldson had three hits and three RBIs; Parker and Brandon Triplett each drove in two runs.
Stone 10, Bay 0: Truitt Smith (1-1) picked up Stone's first win of the season Tuesday, striking out four in four innings. Steven Hartfield tallied two doubles and two RBIs, Tristan Parker had two hits and an RBI, Mason Hunt hit a triple and two RBIs, Preston Stringer recorded a double and an RBI, as did Miles Allison and Hunter Clark.
St. Stanislaus 3, St. Martin 2: Levi Knight struck out eight in St. Stanislaus' win. He also hit a double and an RBI. Jack Wagner picked up the save for St. Stanislaus (2-1).
Ocean Springs 5, Picayune 2: Blake Sears earned the win for the Greyhounds (3-0) on Tuesday. Taylor Reeves hit a double in the game.
Biloxi 5, Pascagoula 1: Austin Williams earned the win in relief of Trey Shaffer for Biloxi (2-1). After Shaffer struck out nine in five innings, William whiffed four over the final two innings. Shaffer went 2-for-2 with two doubles. Elijah Nelson recorded a two-RBI double. Jordan O'Keefe recorded two singles and an RBI. Justin Hulett tallied a double, single and an RBI.
Gulfport 14, Poplarville 1 (5 inn.): Gulfport senior right-hander Travis McNett threw a no-hitter as Gulfport beat Poplarville 14-1 in five innings Monday night at the Pearl River Community College tournament in Poplarville.
McNett struck out seven batters with three walks in five innings on his way to his first win of the season.
"He threw his fastball, cutter and slider," Gulfport coach Jamie McMahon said. "He pitched. He located all three of his pitches."
Southern Miss signee Alex Nelms had a big game at the plate with a single, double and a three-run home run for a five-RBI night. McNett and Kevin Carter both had a pair of singles for Gulfport (4-0).
Other scores: Resurrection 5, Perry Central 3 (suspended after 4 innings).
Basketball
St. Martin's Sikes honored by MACJC: Former St. Martin standout Rodrick Sikes was named the MACJC Men's Basketball Player of the Week for his efforts in leading Southwest to its first state championship in 53 years.
The freshman went wild in two of his team's tournament games. He scored 27 points against Northwest and then scored a career-high 31 in the championship game against Jones County.
Southwest coach Thomas Gray said in a statement Sikes play in the tournament was "exceptional."
"I couldn't be happier for him to have had a successful week like he had," Gray said.
Softball
East Central 8, D'Iberville 0: Madie Sparks (2-1) recorded a six-hit shutout and also had two RBIs. Sarah Depperschmidt had three hits for ECHS (3-0). East Central hosts West Harrison on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
West Harrison 12, Bay 2: Anna Necaise earned the win for WHHS (2-1), striking out two in three innings. Braxton DeWitt pitched in relief, striking out three. Rebecca Cuevas had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs. Lauren Jackson also hit a single and a double with an RBI. Megan Sexton hit two singles with an RBI.
Hancock 2, Ocean Springs 0 (5 inn): Hancock (1-2) beat OSHS Tuesday night, with the game called after five innings due to rain. Kaylan Ladner picked up the win, striking out five. Brooke Fagan went 3-for-3 with a single, double and triple. Brailey Smith recorded a triple and Rylee Swilley drove in both HHS runs on a single.
Other scores: St. Patrick led Long Beach 5-2 when the game was called in the third inning due to lightning; Our Lady Academy 12, Resurrection 0.
